Treat Your Skin! Korean Skincare Welcome Box FREE Offer

If I were to ask you to name one single beauty product that you never want to leave home without, which would it be?

To be honest, I would have a hard time answering this question. If you've followed this blog for a while then you know I'm all about the skincare.  I honestly, cannot help it - it's definitely turned into a mild obsession.

I can't really complain about being skincare obsessed because it is due to my skincare indulgence, I have had the chance to use many a product within the past few years. But,
through out the last year or so, there have been two products that would be at the top of my "don't leave home without it" list.

That's the Julep's Bare Face Cleansing Oil + Konjac facial sponge.

Once I received the cleansing oil (which was a looong time ago) in a Maven box, I used it and have not looked back.  The cleansing oil is amazing at removing makeup and dirt from the skin. Plus, it contains ingredients (grape-seed oil, olive oil and Power Cell Complex) that are great for nourishing your skin.

The Bare Face Cleansing Oil + Konjac facial sponge are two of my holy grail skincare products that I highly recommend to all my close girl-friends - and that includes You.

Julep is offering this fan favorite skincare product as part of their limited-edition Korean Skincare Welcome Box offer free for new Maven subscribers.

Six Sunscreen Products For Your Face

Six Sunscreen Products For Your Face - The Daily Fashion and Beauty News

Sunscreen creams are necessary year round, especially when you plan to spend long periods of time outdoors on a hot, sunny day.

Sun-rays contain ultraviolet rays that penetrate deep into skin tissues and destroy natural binding elements that keep the skin intact, making it loosen up over time - not just on your body but on your face as well.

The facial skin tissues are very soft and get easily tanned and damaged when exposed to sun rays for long durationIn other words, being in the sun without sunscreen will certainly speed up the aging process.

Nobody wants that. Period.

Fortunately, there of tons of different sunscreen creams and lotions available that are effective at protecting both your body and face.

Here are six sunscreen product suggestions for you to choose from the next time you find yourself at the store (or online):

NEUTROGENA PURE & FREE LIQUID DAILY SUNBLOCK

Neutrogena is known for having great skincare products - this sunscreen is no different. This sunscreen has an SPF 50, is lightweight in consistency and has little to no smell. This sunscreen is also hypoallergenic which is ideal if you have sensitive skin.

Buy it on sale for $11.04 at ulta.com

CLINIQUE SUPER CITY BLOCK OIL-FREE DAILY FACE PROTECTOR BROAD SPECTRUM 40 SPF

Other than having a ridiculously long product name, this sunscreen from Clinique is gentle enough for everyday application on the face without feeling too heavy on the skin. Another fact is that it can be used everyone as it is intended for all skin types.

Buy it at for $23.00 at sephora.com

NEUTROGENA CLEAR FACE LIQUID-LOTION SUNBLOCK SPF 55

A second sunscreen option from Neutrogena is their Clear Face Liquid-Lotion Sunblock. Not only does this sunscreen have a high SPF, it is also "break out free". Those of us with acne prone skin can use this one without worrying about our skin freaking out.  This sunscreen can be applied to both face and body.

Buy it on sale for $10.19 at ulta.com

KISS MY FACE FACE FACTOR SUNSCREEN FOR FACE & NECK SPF 30

Although this sunscreens' SPF is a little lower (30) that the previous ones mentioned, this one is formulated for the face and neck area.  We've all been told to protect the neck area as it ages easier and faster than the face, so this sunscreen will definitely come in handy just for that reason alone. On the plus side, the tube is thin/small enough to fit nicely in your purse.

Buy it for $10.99 online (only) at walgreens.com

DR. DENESE SPF 30 DEFENSE DAY CREAM

Somewhat pricier than the other sunscreens listed, Dr. Denese Defense Day Cream is a BB cream with "self-adjusting melanin technology", meaning that it will self adjust to your skin tone (similar to L'Oreal's Pure Magic BB Cream). This sunscreen is great for priming the skin before makeup application. The formula dries matte which is awesome for those of us with oily skin.

Buy the day cream + travel size for $65.94 online at qvc.com  or  Buy the single tube for $43.18 on amazon.com

LA ROCHE-POSAY ANTHELIOS 60 ULTRA LIGHT SUNSCREEN FLUID

The best was left for last. This sunscreen fluid from La Roche-Posay has so many benefits that is it simply one of the best options for sunscreen. It has the high SPF 60, anti-oxidants for extra skin protection, light formula that is easily absorbed by your skin, and a matte finish.  Apply this to wear by itself, or as a primer under makeup.

Buy it for $29.99 + free deluxe sample of Anthelios Shaka Face SPF 60 (offer is good until 5/30/15) online at ulta.com

Hopefully, these sunscreen recommendations listed gave you a good starting point if you have been searching for a sunscreen to try out.

Most of these are lightweight, non-greasy, without too much fragrance and high in SPF. Some are developed for oily skins, others for dry ones.

Select the cream that suits you best. Trying out one or several creams can help guide you to stick with the one that works best on your skin.

Always keep in mind that these sunscreens should be applied in the morning before going out - even under your makeup, especially if your foundation of choice does not have sunscreen in it.

Effective skin care begins with taking protective measures. It is not limited to applying your regular skin care products. A good sunscreen lotion should be added to your everyday morning routine.

There is nothing better than taking precautions and preserving your skin's delicate nature over time.

Bridal Season 2013 - Skincare for the Bride to Be

Early last week we shared our first Bridal Season 2013 post, where we showed you three simple yet classic wedding guest outfits. Here is the link to that post for your reference: Bridal Season 2013 - Apricot Collection - Wedding Guest Edition.

skincare for the bride to be

In today's article we are going to concentrate on the bride to be only - specifically skincare tips.

When you are a bride to be, you don't want to compromise on anything. This includes every detail from your wedding favors to your wedding gown and jewelry. So, why compromise on having less than perfect skin on the day itself?

For women who have normal skin, you may not feel the need to put in extra effort to ensure that your skin is in good condition before your special day. However, women who have dry, oily, or combination skin must take extra care of their skin to ensure it is free of skin problems and glows with good health.

It's never too early to begin a skin care routine to ensure healthy and clear skin, even if this means starting a few months before your wedding ceremony.

If you have oily skin, you will need to keep a range of products especially formulated for oily skin at hand. Usually women who have oily skin tend to have a drier epidermis but an oily underneath. Depending on the season you are getting married in, try your best to have a range of products that you can use during that particular season to maintain the health of your oily skin.

BeautyStoreDepot- Brand Name Beauty for Less

Here is the ideal routine for oily skin:

Cleanser: Your facial cleanser should be gel based. Apply it on your face and neck with soft circular motions and rinse carefully, making sure you splash water at least 10 times. In case you are getting married in winter you can use a creamier cleanser as you skin may become dry.

Product Recommendation: Avene Diacneal Gel Cleanser

Toner: Never use an alcohol based toner! These toners will dry your skin surface completely, while locking the impurities beneath it leading to pimples or ever acne. You must never over dry you skin. The best toners for oily skin are those with AHAs.

Product Recommendation: Lerosett Purifying Acne Toner

Tip: Apply cucumber water with a clean cotton pad for a refreshing and clean feel.

Moisturizer: Moisturizing oily skin helps prevent the release of more oil and pimples, since dry skin leads to production of oil. A cream that helps mattify the surface of your skin will give you a clean, clear, and younger looking skin - exactly what you need on your wedding day!

Product Recommendation: Pevonia Botanica Mattifying Oily Skin Cream

Foundation: If you want to use a foundation as a base for bridal make-up that will work, always make sure you cleanse your face and neck thoroughly before going to sleep. On the day of, try to use only oil-free formulas. If you feel that applying a oil-free foundation, then try applying mineral makeup instead. Here is an article that explains how to get the best makeup look for the hot summer season.

When removing your makeup, use a make up remover made especially for oily skin type and use a clean cotton ball to wipe away the eye shadow, mascara, lipstick, liner etc. You must also use a good quality facial exfoliant to get rid of the grime, dirt, and clogged pores. Ideally you should use an exfoliant only twice each week, and concentrate on your 'T' zone (the forehead, nose, and chin).

Here is an easy do-it-yourself article we posted on making an oatmeal scrub exfoliant.

Finally, if you have followed the routine laid out for you and are still affected by skin problems, run to an expert. A dermatologist will be able to offer you better solutions and ensure your beauty is not just skin deep on your nuptials!

5 Simple Tips To Fix 5 Mistakes We Almost All Make When We Put On Makeup

women fixing makeup mistakes in mirror

Have you ever been putting on your makeup and when everything is going well, you suddenly make a mistake that ruins all of your effort? Have you had to take off your makeup some time because, without meaning to, you've ruined your makeup? Surely you have; it happens to all of us.

In today's makeup post, you will find five of the most common mistakes and the best tips to quickly fix them without having to take off all of your makeup...

"I'VE PUT ON TOO MUCH FOUNDATION"
This is a very common mistake that we all make when we put on makeup. If you are totally made up, to take off any excess foundation, do the following:

Lightly moisten a clean sponge with water (the sponge should be almost dry and without any makeup residue) and sponge all of your face with downward movements.

TIP: It's very important, most of all, to avoid excess foundation and concealer around the eyes. To eliminate any excess in this area, perform the same step and afterwards use your fingertips to softly blur the product in that area.

"MY EYESHADOW LOOKS TOO DARK"
If you've put on too much eyeshadow, or it looks too dark, follow these steps to quickly fix the problem:

If it happened on your upper eyelid, blur the eyeshadow toward the edges with a clean brush to reduce the color. If it still looks very dark, apply a little bit of matte cream eyeshadow with a brush (if you don't have cream eyeshadow, you can use translucent powder) and blur the eyeshadow.

If it happened on the lower part of your eye, use a fine, clean brush to blur, or pat it softly with a Q-tip.

If as you were blurring, you've left the contour of the eyelid and the shadow looks very dark, blur it with a clean sponge and afterwards apply a little bit of foundation, patting lightly to fix the foundation.

"I'VE PUT ON TOO MUCH BLUSH"
If you applied too much blush, try the following tip:

Stroke your cheek with a thick, loose powder bush the brush should be completely clean. If you still have too much blush on, apply translucent or clear powder with the same brush, just over the blush. That way the two powders should mix, clarifying the original color.

"I'VE PUT TOO MUCH MAKEUP ON MY EYEBROWS"
When we put too much makeup on our eyebrows, we look harsh and we can't even recognize ourselves. Follow the following tip to quickly solve this:

Simply brush the eyebrow with a clean Q-tip, going against the grain of your eyebrow. You will see how quickly the color you initially applied disappears.

"I'VE SMEARED MASCARA ON MY EYELID"
That's all right. Just follow these next steps and you'll see how you can quickly fix the problem:

Continue applying makeup and when you have finished, allowing enough time for the mascara to dry, apply a Q-tip right over the smudge. You'll see how it quickly disappears and you don't need to remove the makeup from your whole eye.

TIP: A good trick to avoid smudging yourself is applying makeup first to your inferior eyelashes and then to the superior.

DIY Beautifying Smoothies for Healthier Hair, Skin and Hydration

It's been a while since we last shared a do-it-yourself beauty post, so we wanted to get back on track by sharing not one but three different do-it-yourself beauty recipes. Yes, you read that correctly - three new beautifying smoothie recipes.

Warning: These are not going to be the usual recipes; these beauty elixirs are from one of Hollywood's hottest Nutritionists, Kimberly Snyder, who shared these with the editing team at OK magazine.

Are you ready to see what smoothies are recommended for our hair, skin and hydration?

diy beautifying smoothies for healthier hair skin and hydration

First up: Stronger Healthier Hair

A green smoothie like the one below packs a week's worth of veggies in one single serving. How long does it take before the results are noticeable?  According to the article, it's said that skin will appear more vibrant after one week, and both hair and nails are healthier after one month of drinking this green smoothie. Not that bad, huh?

The Glowing Green Smoothie
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 head organic, romaine lettuce, chopped
  • 3-4 stalks organic celery
  • 1/2 head of a large bunch or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach
  • 1 organic apple, cored and chopped
  • 1 organic pear, cored and chopped
  • 1/3 bunch organic cilantro
  • 1/3 bunch organic parsley
  • 1 organic banana
  • Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon
Add water and chopped head of romaine to blender. Blend at low speed until smooth. Add in celery, apple and pear - blend on high speed. Add in cilantro and parsley. Finish by adding in banana and lemon juice.

Next up: Smooth Radiant Skin

This smoothie has one super food that is essential for our skin's health: the Acai Berry. The Acai Berry has a very high content of omega 3 fatty acids, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and fiber.

Rain-forest Acai Smoothie
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 packet frozen acai
  • 1 tbsp. raw cacao (this ingredient is optional)
  • Stevia to taste
  • 1/2 avocado (this is also optional)
Using a blender, blend the acai and almond milk at low speed until you have broken down the acai, then move to a higher speed. Once the liquid is smooth, add in the cacao and Stevia. Add the avocado to make this smoothie into a much denser snack or have this for dessert.

Lastly: Hydration and Added Antioxidants

The essential ingredient to this smoothie is the chia seed. These little seeds provide antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber. It is also said that the seed is capable of absorbing 10 times their weight in water which will help keep you hydrated all day long.

Power Protein Smoothie
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk, or water
  • 1/4 cup hemp or brown rice protein powder
  • 1-2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 frozen acai smoothie packet
  • liquid Stevia to sweeten
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Add the almond milk and or water to the blender first, then add in all the remaining ingredients. Blend until completely smooth.

In my opinion, I think I prefer the fruit smoothies over the Green Smoothie. Although, I am looking forward to trying the Glowing Green Smoothie, I am just not completely sure how I will react to this mix of veggies. One detail that I can point out is that most of the ingredients needed for these beauty recipes can be easily found in the organic/natural section of most grocery stores; if that is not the case in your local area, then I would suggest perhaps visiting a specialty store, such as Trader Joe's instead.

Take Care of Your Skin This Winter

As we continue moving forward through this dreadfully cold winter season, there is one part of our bodies that needs a little extra tender loving care: Our Skin.

Dry, itchy skin affects more than 80 percent of women and can be most prevalent during the cold winter months - when humidity and temperature drop - making skin particularly vulnerable to dryness and cracking.

take care of your skin this winter

It can happen to the best of us but with a few basic "know-hows" dry flaky winter skin can easily be prevented. If you have a problem with dry skin, consider the following:

* What personal care products do you use?  Sensitivity to fragrances and dyes commonly found in soaps, lotions and even deodorants can be a frequent cause of skin irritation. Look for personal care products specially formulated for sensitive skin that are hypoallergenic and free of dyes and perfumes.

* Make the switch. As the temperature dips, your skin craves more moisture. Remember to replace lightweight summer lotion with lotions that have a higher concentration of emollients (lipids), which help skin seal in and retain moisture.

A good daily facial moisturizer to use is Olay CC Cream - Total Effects Tone Correcting Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15.  To moisturize the rest of your body, I recommend using Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion.

* Get vapor relief. Cranking up the thermostat in winter creates more dry heat, which can leave skin parched and lead to itchiness. Use a vaporizer, which produces hot steam, or humidifier, which produces cool mist, to add moisture to the air.

I recommend using a smaller sized vaporizer that can easily be placed next to the bed during the night, such as this one from Sunbeam - Sunbeam 1388-800-001 Sunbeam 1388-800 Warm Steam Vaporizer.

An important detail to keep in mind when using any type of vaporizer or humidifier, is to thoroughly clean and disinfect the entire unit regularly to prevent harmful particles from building up. This is especially important for people with mold allergies.

* Keep it cool. Chilly winters may make a long hot shower or bath sound enticing, but hot water can actually wash away skin's natural oils, leaving it extra dry and itchy. Instead, take warm showers and pat skin dry. To lock in moisture, apply body lotions containing ingredients like petrolatum and glycerin which work to keep skin hydrated.

Now it's YOUR turn:   How do you like to take care of your skin during the winter months?   Do you have any favorite lotions you like using?   Let us know in the comments!

Gig Spotlight - What I want in my Bag 2013!

Beauties, the weekend is here! Are you excited? I hope you are!  I am super excited to share this beauty post with you. What's the topic today?

GIG

Today's topic comes courtesy of Gig Bloggers and their bi-weekly beauty prompt of "what I want in my bag 2013". The main guideline was to select our top #5 beauty products that we are currently lusting over. Putting this list together was super easy for me because it just so happens, I am always making small lists of items that I want to buy throughout the year as a small treat just for myself.

We all do that, right? Please don't tell me I am the only one that does this! Well, if I am, so be it!

You will notice that there are more than five (5) items but I just had to add a photo of Meredith Wendell Satchel in Navy Blue. I mean if I am going to have a list of things I want {or shall I say, need} I have to have a new handbag to put them in, right?

Okay...now we got that covered, let's talk about what's going inside the bag:

  • 1. Sigma - Paris Palette Limited Edition : Of course, since this is limited edition, I have to have it before its completely sold out. More importantly though, this palette has everything you need to create gorgeous makeup looks. I like that!
  • 2. Olay CC Cream Total Effects Tone Correcting Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15 - It's time that I get over the coveted BB cream craze {or perhaps not!} and give the new CC cream a try. I am all for trying new creams from Olay - their creams are really good.
  • 3. Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System - Other then being named like me, I have heard so many great things about this product that I just want it! Every time Clarisonic is featured on QVC, I find myself immediately drawn in and completely immersed in the show... I have my daughter to blame for that!
  • 4. H2O Plus Marilyn T-Teasing Brush - Over the years the texture of my hair has changed so much that I find myself needing to tease it in order to create added volume. I don't tease my hair everyday but for special meetings I like the idea of my hair having a little more umph to it.
  • 5. clear days ahead Trial Kit by Philosophy - With age come raging hormones..not fun! As a teenager, this was never an issue but NOW? Huh, that's another story! So yes, this trial kit along with the Clarisonic should help me maintain my skin clear from blemishes...poof!

Now it's Your turn: If you had to make a top #5 beauty lust list for 2013, what items would you want? Please share your lust list in the comments, we love hearing from you!

Easy Do It Yourself Manicure

Today's easy do it yourself post is going to kill two birds with one stone. How? Well, it just so happens to be Day 9 of the Latina Lifestyle Photo Challenge and today's daily prompt is nail art. {To see what the photo challenge is about and join in on the fun click HERE}.

Now that one bird has been whacked {poor birdie!} let's get our stones together and tackle this Easy Do it Yourself Manicure post.

Putting makeup on or dressing up for a special occasion is very easy, but has it ever happened to you that when you're all dressed up, some broken or badly manicured nails ruin your image? Most likely this has happened to you, it's happened to all of us. It's hard to get a manicure every week, and also expensive. That's why in this article we're sharing with you the best tips we know of to do your own manicure at home and always have impeccable hands.

1. START AT THE BEGINNING

Set a day of the week to dedicate a few minutes to your hands. That way it will be easier to always keep them impeccable. For me, for example, I know that Sundays are my day of "beauty at home"; I take advantage of the day to take care of my hands, apply a facial masque and then fix my hair. I set apart some hours every week to dedicate them to me. It's great. Try it! What's more, you deserve it.

2. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO A MANICURE AT HOME?

To do your own manicure at home, you don't need much more than the following tools:

Orange stick:
Orange Wood Stick Cuticle Pusher Manicure Lot of 100
The orange stick removes the cuticle and the dirt from your nails. They are very economical and are very useful. I also use them to remove nail polish from around the fingers when I accidentally paint outside my fingernail contour. Just soak the orange stick in nail polish remover and quickly remove the edges.

Nail clipper:
JMK 06820 Nail Clipper Set - 3 Piece
It's better to file your nails to shape them, but sometimes it's necessary to cut them to equal lengths. Use a nail clipper instead of scissors.

File or emery board:
Tweezerman Nail File Collection Pack of Emery Boards, 0.7 Ounce
Invest in a good, long-lasting file. The best ones are made of cardboard. Choose a size that you like and keep it. Also, there are some files that are stronger on one side than on the other. These are the ideal kind because that way you only have to buy one.

Nail buffer and polisher:
FPO Lil' Whistler 3-Way Nail Buffer 3.25"
Usually files have one side to file the nail and another to give it shine. If it's not the case with yours, obtain a nail buffer and polisher. These smooth out your nails if they're peeling.

Transparent treatment nail polish:
You need to choose something that works well with you. If your nails are always breaking, you need a nail hardener, of if they're dry, you need a moisturizing treatment. Usually any pharmacy will have an entire treatment range at very accessible prices. This nail polish also serves as a transparent nail polish when you don't feel like painting them.

Cuticle oil:
Essie Apricot Cuticle Oil Nail Treatment
This is one of the best buys you can make to have impeccable hands. These oils soften and moisturize the cuticle. If you are not very good at cutting your cuticles, you can skip this step by using this product.

Colored nail polish:
Choose the colors you like and that coordinate with the image you want to project. For example, if you have a special dinner, paint your nails a wine red. It looks very nice, especially if your nails aren't too long. Or, for example, if you have a business lunch, paint your fingernails a porcelain tone; it's very elegant and discrete. If you feel like adding a touch of color and fun, paint your nails a dark pink. Why not?

Protective/strengthening polish:
This foundation will help your colored nail polish to last longer and will also add a nice shine to your polish.

Exfoliating lotion:
Veris Dead Sea Natural Cosmetics - Nourishing and Moisturizing Hand & Nail Cream
You can use a body exfoliating lotion or else you can make a natural one with sugar and olive oil. Try it it's amazing! This is one of my most ancient tips. I don't remember where I read it or from whom I learned it, but the truth is that I use it every week and I love it! All you need are two teaspoons of white sugar and four tablespoons of virgin olive oil (if you prefer, you can use moisturizing body oil, but olive oil has worked well for me. Mix together well and apply to your hands, rubbing them gently. Don't forget the fingers and the nails. You can also use this exfoliating lotion on your forearms and elbows; then rinse yourself with lukewarm water. Your hands will feel soft and like new!

Moisturizing hand cream:
Buy a good moisturizer for your hands, one that adapts to your needs. For example, if your hands crack easily or you have dark spots...buy what you need.

Nail polish remover:
Super Nail Non Acetone Polish Remover, 16 Ounce
The ones that are especially good are those that don't contain acetone, as this is very aggressive and many people are allergic to it.

3. Now that you have all your supplies, follow these simple steps:

1. Remove all nail polish from your nails.

2. Cut your nails to an equal length.

3. File your nails and use the buffer to leave them smooth.

4. Use the orange stick to eliminate any leftover dirt and to softly remove the cuticles (I don't recommend cutting the cuticles at home, as I think this is very difficult and a job best left to professionals. I know that some of you do this. If you already do this and you're happy with the result, continue doing so. If not, just try to soften them with cuticle oil.)

5. Exfoliate your hands. Follow the advice we gave you previously. You'll see the result immediately.

6. Dry your hands well. This step is very important. If you've exfoliated your hands with olive oil and you don't dry your hands off well, especially the nails, the nail polish will not last long. Remember to dry yourself carefully.

7. Paint your nails. Follow this order: treatment foundation, colored nail polish, another coat of colored nail polish, and protective/strengthening nail polish. I know, it's a lot of coats, but remember that you want your nails to look perfect all week long.

8. Moisturize your hands. Lastly and once at least an hour has gone by (yes, one hour if not, after all the effort, your nails will be immediately ruined when you apply the moisturizer), moisturize your hands carefully. You will feel like new!

Here are a few extras for you:

Paint your fingernails while you watch TV or listen to music or read a magazine. Take some time to relax, and take advantage of it while the polish dries.  You can follow the majority of these steps on your feet as well. The exfoliating cream is great for your feet...

Once a month, you should cover your hands in a moisturizing face masque and put on some cotton gloves. Sleep in them, and the next day your hands will feel like new.  Do this manicure every two months. It's a pleasant luxury, and that way your hands will need much less care, especially the cuticles.

Whenever a cuticle acts up, apply oil on it. You will see how upon moisturizing it, it will immediately soften and won't bother you.

Remember: Our hands are an important part of our personal image. Don't neglect them!

Now it's your turn:  How often do you like to give yourself a manicure?
